Battery Management System (BMS)
The function of the battery management system (BMS) is to ensure the optimal use of a battery system. It monitors the battery and protects against deep discharge, for example. Simply put, it represents the "brain" of a battery system.
When using several cells in series or parallel connection, the use of a BMS is recommended. This ensures safe operation.

Protection and safety function
Protection against overcharging, deep discharging, overcurrent or even overtemperature are solved with this core element.
Charge and discharge monitoring
The charge and discharge monitoring ensures safe operation. During the charging as well as the discharging process.
Additional and comfort functions:
In addition to the main functions of the Protection Circuit Board (PCB), the BMS can be expanded with further functions. A comfort function is the active cell balancing (equalisation of the voltage of the battery cells), the fuel gauging (output of the operating status of the battery via an external display) or also a Bluetooth module which transmits the operating status via Bluetooth to a terminal device (e.g. smartphone).
Communication:
The error memory of a BMS can be defined as communication. It records the operation and saves any irregularities so that they can be read out in the event of a repair or warranty claim.
Structure of the BMS
As described at the beginning, the BMS is the "brain" of the battery system. It is the link between the individual cells of the battery pack and the consumer.
In addition to the many additional functions, the BMS has the great advantage of being reversible.
If the cells are electrically disconnected from the BMS in the event of a short circuit or an overcurrent during the charging or discharging process,
they can be released again for charging and discharging under certain conditions/presettings.
This has another major advantage over the classic fuse, which is irreversibly damaged.
